It's never straightforward, is it?

If there's one thing you have to be when you're an adult learning to skate, it's persistent.

My husband and I are total opposites in a lot of ways - and skating definitely showed us that. He started skating for a little while but at the first hurdle....Well, this is his life philosophy:

I tend to be a bit more of a trier, and it's a good job really because skating's had more ups and downs than most pogo sticks. If I quit whenever I couldn't do something straight away, I'd have had to quit skating a hundred times already.

My lesson on Friday was a case in point. I don't know
what happened, but I felt like a total beginner again - every single thing I did was wobbly and dreadful. My step sequence was appalling, spins non-existent and I came far too close to a spiral-splat.

I did fear I had taken a massive step back, but then in practice today, things seemed back to normal. Hey ho, strange how things go.

In other news, and following on from my last post on the progress that seems to be being made in adult skating provision recently, there's a great project happening at one of our local rinks at the moment. If anyone lives in the North-east, I'd suggest you get yourselves there. There's a ladies-only skating session every Monday night, for FREE, from 7.30-9.30pm, and it lasts for the next 18 months. I believe it's Sport England funded, and there are even two coaches on the ice to give basic lessons to total beginners. What better way to get started? No forking out for lessons until you know you love it. And you WILL love it!

Additionally - did anyone clock this? Skate Like a Star - interesting concept. What are your thoughts on it?

  1. Skaters will always have "off" days, so regressing on certain things is totally normal. Your elements will come back, but you can't force it. Once something disappears for the day, let it be and work on something else. The ladies-only free skating session sounds amazing! And the Skate Like a Star website sounds interesting.
